Goal setting is where success starts. If you don’t have a goal you have nowhere to go. You’re like a ship sailing the ocean in no particular direction.

What Motivates People?
Before you set a goal you must understand the concept of goals.
You must understand the power of dreams.
“Dreams are a projection of the life we wish to lead. Therefore, when we allow them to ‘pull’ us, our dreams unleash a creative force that can overpower all obstacles hindering the attainment of our objectives.
To unharness this power, however, dreams must be well-defined. A fuzzy future has little power. To really achieve your dreams, to really have your future plans pull you, your dreams must be vivid.”
Think how a building needed blueprints to be built.
Goals are the blueprint for a successful future.
You must have a reason for your goals
“Reasons come first, answers second.”
There are 4 great motivators:
- The Feeling of Winning
- Benevolance – to share your wealth
There are also what Jim Rohn calls ‘ Nitty Gritty Reasons’, they are sort of like avoiding embarrasment, or proving your are right to someone else.
“Massive success is the sweetest revenge.”
How to Set Goals
OK, this is the meat & potatoes of where its all at. Do this and you’re on your way, if you just read it and be like, ‘yeah, that makes sense’ but do nothing then its a waste of time.
First you must work out your Long Range goals.
In a notebook write the heading “Long Range Goals”
Answer the question “What do I want within the next 1 – 10 years?”
- What do I want to do?
- What do I want to be?
- What do I want to see?
- What do I want to have?
- Where do I want to go?
- What would I like to share?
Take 12 – 15 minutes & write down as many as you can. Allow your mind to free flow.
Once you have done that next to each goal write down how many years it will take to achieve that goal next to the goal.
Try and get an even balance between shorter – longer term goals:
From that list get 16 goals (4 from each category) & write down a paragraph for each goal. Make sure its a detailed description of the goal & the reason why you want to achieve or aquire it – you have to find your WHY!
Copy these 16 goals onto a separate sheet & be sure to review them weekly
Goal setting is a life long process
Now you have your long term goals, you need to make a list of your short term goals. A short term goal may take anywhere from a day to a year to achieve.
They must be related to long term goals
Short term goals are like “Confidence Builders”
List all your short term goals on in a notebook – arrange them however it makes sense to you.
When you complete a goal, be sure to reward yourself – very important. Always enjoy your victories.
And make sure to surround yourself with people that have high expectations, people that won’t bring you down the second you’re off course.
